How to Be the Perfect Hostess

Whether it’s a big holiday dinner, a birthday party, or simply a fun get-together for friends you decided to throw, being the perfect hostess is the best way that you can ensure that all of your guests have fun and that your party is a success. Here, we’re going to share some of our favorite tips on how to be the perfect hostess.

Perfect Hostess

  1. Realize It’s Not Going to be Perfect

Wine may be spilled, people may get into political debates, and the dog may just get loose and start stealing food from people’s plates. And that’s ok. The first thing you need to do to be the perfect hostess is realize that things won’t necessarily go exactly according to plan, so your job is to relax and roll with the punches.

Getting upset about the little things will only cause your guests to become stressed and possibly embarrassed, so try to relax and just enjoy the party. You can worry about cleaning up later. As much as possible, laugh problems off and recognize that in order for a party to be successful, it doesn’t necessarily have to be magazine-picture perfect.

  1. Have as Much Done in Advance as Possible

Pick foods that can be done far in advance so that you don’t have to spend half the party in the kitchen. This will mean that you can spend more time with your guests and will be able to enjoy yourself so much more than if you’re stuck doing last minute preparations all night. Some hostesses will even have foods made a week or more in advance that will still be ready for the party.

  1. Keep Guests Busy

You don’t need to have an itinerary ready full of planned activities, but you want to make sure there are plenty of things for your guests to do, especially if it’s a group of people that may not know each other very well. This can be anything from board games scattered across a big folding table or interesting books or photo albums left out on the coffee table.

This is especially important at the beginning of the party as guest arrive, so they can jump right into doing something and talking with other guests. This way, by the time everybody is there and the food is served, the guests are interacting and truly enjoying each other and the party just naturally flows and keeps rolling from there.

  1. Set the Mood

Whatever type of party you’re having, you want to make sure the mood is set as soon as guests arrive. This means that the right kind of music playlist should be running at the right volume, the lights should generally be dimmed, and the decorations should get guests excited about the celebration. One of the best ways to set the mood is by putting a few drops of an essential oil in a diffuser.

When it comes to decorations, it’s important to remember that you don’t need to spend a fortune to make your house look amazing. Doing something as simple as putting up Christmas lights is a great way to set the mood for nearly any type of party, and you’ve probably already got more than a few strings laying around that you can use.
